Emergency Fund FAQ

What is an Emergency Fund?

This is a specific pool of funding raised to provide organizations and communities resources to confront urgent and unexpected needs and crises. PFund will use the funds in responsive grants to meet frontline needs, grow LGBTQ+ civic engagement, and provide a philanthropic response to de facto gender-affirming care ban.
This campaign is not only about surviving the next headline. These emergency dollars will defend the present and invest in the future by:

  • Stabilizing organizations today

  • Preserving infrastructure for the fights ahead

  • Preventing burnout and collapse in the ecosystem that sustains our communities.

Will this pull resources from frontline support for our undocumented neighbors?

NO. PFund Foundation supports and advocates for participation in the immediate mutual-aid response to the ongoing federal assault on our undocumented communities. Our queer, undocumented community is estimated at over 1 million and is directly impacted by this assault.

We are viewing this moment through an intersectional lens. LGBTQ+ community members and activists have been at the frontlines of this fight, including Renee Nicole Good who was murdered by ICE with her wife sitting next to her, and Chauntyll Allen, a St. Paul School Board member now under federal indictment for peacefully protesting ICE. Our freedoms are inextricably connected.

The PFund Emergency Fund will provide support to frontline organizations, as well as pool resources to be deployed throughout 2026 as we continue to confront and challenge the attacks on our community. Last year, 600+ legislative bills were introduced to erase our identities, police our bodies, dehumanize our lives, and strip our rights. By every metric, violence and intimidation towards LGBTQ+ populations rose exponentially in 2025. We are preparing for an elevated threat this year.

Will this fund organizations and initiatives outside of MN?

Yes. While Minnesota feels very much like the frontline in a battle, all of our communities across the Upper Midwest are facing repression and the spectre of violent tyranny. PFund will be issuing grants this spring to 30+ organizations across the Upper Midwest that work to promote our rural LGBTQ+ communities and those advocating for trans and gender-expansive rights and resources.

Why PFund Foundation?

We are built for moments like this. As a regional LGBTQ+ community foundation rooted in the Upper Midwest, we offer something no single donor, organization, or short-term campaign can achieve alone: the ability to pool large-scale resources and distribute them across urban and rural networks that need them most.

When donors give together through Pfund:

  • Individual contributions become collective force

  • Dollars move farther, faster, and more strategically

  • No single donor bears the burden alone—and no community is left isolated. Pooling resources allows us to respond at scale, not just symbolically.

When emergency conditions arise, PFund:

  • Provides rapid and unrestricted funding

  • Supports organizations facing sudden surges in demand or threats

Decades of regional relationships mean we:

  • Understand the unique political, cultural, and geographic realities of the Upper Midwest

  • Fund both visible leaders and smaller, rural, and under-resourced organizations

  • Reach communities that are often overlooked in national responses

PFund provides trust, accountability, and stewardship through:

  • Grant-making that is done through all-volunteer community review. No backroom decisions. This is our communities’ money and our communities’ choice as to where it goes.

  • Transparent governance and fiscal oversight

  • Deep accountability to LGBTQ+ communities

  • A credible, trusted platform for donors who want impact and not performative giving

With PFund, you can give with urgency and confidence, knowing your resources are being stewarded wisely.
